Motorcyclist dies following crash with FDOT truck on I-95 in Palm Beach Gardens

PALM BEACH COUNTY, FL — A 41-year-old West Palm Beach resident lost his life Monday afternoon when his motorcycle collided with a FDOT vehicle on Interstate 95 in Palm Beach Gardens, reports WPTV.

Florida Highway Patrol officials say the incident took place on northbound I-95 just south of the exit to Donald Ross Road, at about 12:47 p.m.

Preliminary details show a Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) Severe Incident Response Vehicle was traveling in the inside center travel lane of the northbound highway at the same time that the victim was operating his 1980 Harley Davidson motorcycle in the inside travel lane.

Officials said the driver of the FDOT vehicle, 69, began turning left onto the marked “Official Use Only” turnaround in the median and failed to see the motorcyclist. Shortly after the FDOT vehicle entered the inside lane and then partially onto the shoulder, the motorcyclist collided with the left side of the FDOT vehicle, despite attempts to avoid a crash.

The impact threw the rider off the Harley Davidson, which was forced under the FDOT vehicle.

The motorcyclist, whose identity remains undisclosed, died from his injuries at the scene.

It’s unclear at this time whether the FDOT truck driver, who was uninjured, is expected to be charged.

The FHP continues to investigate.
