Man, 76, loses life days after hit-and-run wreck in West Palm Beach

WEST PALM BEACH, FL – A 76-year-old man came out of a restaurant and ran toward his car, but before he could make it, he was struck by a hit-and-run driver and later died.

WPTV said this collision happened around 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov.15th, at the South Dixie Highway and Kanuga Drive intersection. After getting hit, the man, who was later identified as 76-year-old Joseph Mele from West Palm Beach, came into the air before falling to the ground.

Upon arrival, first responders rushed Mele to St. Mary’s Medical Center for treatment of critical, life-threatening injuries. He succumbed to fatal wounds three days later on Nov. 19.

The driver, who was later confirmed to have driven a 2023 Honda Civic, did not stop and render aid and continued going north on the southbound lanes of Dixie Highway.

The suspect, a 66-year-old woman (whose name was not publicly released), was located at a car dealership. Officials found that the damage done to her Honda Civic matched with that of the suspect’s vehicle. Her car was seized.

At this time, authorities did not reveal whether she was arrested, charged, or booked into jail.

Officials have launched an investigation. So, our newsroom will be sure to provide updates as we come to learn more.
