Husband, wife in 80s pass away in hit-and-run in Hialeah
HIALEAH, FL – A husband and wife in their 80s succumbed to fatal wounds on East Eighth Avenue where they were struck by a hit-and-run driver, who was later arrested Sunday.
The events unraveled around 7 p.m., when the driver, operating a black Mercedes, was traveling south on East Eighth, hit the married couple on their way to play lotto, and then drove away, WSVN reports. The couple has been identified as Manuela Hernandez, 84, and Julio Hernandez, 87.
Hialeah Police said they located the suspect, identified as Susej Calcines, and her vehicle a short time later at a Northwest Miami-Dade apartment complex. Calcines admitted to running over the couple. She was arrested and charged with two counts of leaving the scene of a crash and two counts of vehicular homicide.
Calcines drove with a valid license and has a clean driving record. This was the first collision she was involved in.
