Hit-and-run in Atlantis claims cyclist’s life

ATLANTIS, FL – A cyclist was taken to Delray Medical Center, where he passed away before 8:30 a.m. Friday after he was hit by a driver who fled the scene.

This collision happened after 7:30 a.m. at the South Military Trail and Lantana Road junction when the man went right in front of the driver, operating a 2011 Dodge Nitro, WPTV said.

The cyclist had allegedly ridden his bike on northbound Military while traveling in the southbound crosswalk. After the cyclist and vehicle made contact, the cyclist came onto the hood of the truck and fell on the windshield before tumbling to the ground.

The driver, who did not render aid, continued. Palm Beach County deputies later found him and apprehended him. While details behind this crash are still under investigation, officials did say the motorist may have been intoxicated when he hit the cyclist.

In addition, charges and citations have also been unconfirmed, although authorities did say the hit-and-run suspect had cooperated with investigators.

Additional details will be added to this news blog should they surface.
