Update: Police arrest 24-year-old man for DUI injury crash in Miami
MIAMI, FL – As of Monday, police confirmed they arrested a 24-year-old man who was responsible for driving impaired and causing a crash on Friday, Feb. 21, that left a woman in critical condition.
New details from NBC Miami showcase that the intoxicated man, identified as Nicholas Devon Robinson, was going 100 mph in a 40 mph zone on westbound McArthur Causeway. The high rate of speed and being under the influence led Robinson to strike a cement triangle road divider and then crash into a Jeep traveling behind him.
The impact of the wreck ejected the woman, 19-year-old Gabriela Alejandra Rios Flores, from her car and left significant front-end damage to Robinson’s silver Polestar Model 2.
A Miami Beach police officer and EMS crews were quick to respond. Ambulance crews transported Rios Flores to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center. At this time, her chances of surviving are slim.
The officer stayed at the crash site and ordered Robinson to get out of his car at gunpoint. The officer said Robinson showed clear signs of being impaired, such as slurred speech and stench of alcohol. The officer said Robinson seemed completely oblivious to causing the crash.
Robinson refused a blood sample, but the officer was able to get a search warrant for a blood sample and then booked him into the county jail.
Authorities also discovered that Robsinson, from District Heights, Maryland, was held on a $100,000 bond and had a GPS monitor. Aside from facing DUI charges for causing serious bodily injury and for reckless driving causing serious bodily injury, he may also face manslaughter charges.
