1 boy dead, another hurt in collision with big rig in Lakewood
LAKEWOOD, FL – A 13-year-old boy lost his life, and a 12-year-old boy was injured after they were run over by a big rig near Woodlands Middle School.
NBC Miami said the events unfolded around 4 p.m. Thursday when both 8th-grade boys were riding bicycles and crashed into each other. Both boys were ejected and propelled into oncoming traffic, where they were hit by a semi-truck. Both bikes had overturned once they came into contact with the big rig.
The 13-year-old boy died at the scene, and the 12-year-old suffered serious wounds. EMS crews took the surviving occupant to a hospital. Authorities confirmed the boys were students at Woodlands.
At this time, officials did not specify the 12-year-old boy’s current physical condition. They verified that the truck driver was not found to be at fault. With that said, it’s unlikely that criminal charges will be filed.
