Wrong-way wreck in Port St. Lucie claims woman’s life, hurts toddler

PORT ST. LUCIE, FL – A driver of a red 2023 Kia Soul hit a 2022 Toyota Camry while driving the wrong way, which claimed the life of a woman and seriously hurt a toddler Sunday.

Port St. Lucie Police told WPTV that the Kia driver hit the Toyota while driving southbound on northbound Northeast St. James Drive. Officers said the Toyota driver and toddler, a 3-year-old girl, were both wearing seatbelts, while the woman, 40-year-old Beatrice Saturne, did not wear a seatbelt.

Saturne was in the middle rear seat, while the toddler was in the right-rear seat.

First responders rushed the Toyota occupants — the toddler and Saturne — and the Kia driver to local hospitals.

EMS crews transported the little girl and Saturne to Lawnwood Medical Center. Saturne succumbed to her injuries there. The girl received medical attention from doctors there and required additional treatment. As such, medical helicopter personnel transported her to St. Mary’s Medical Center in West Palm Beach, where she is now recovering.

The Kia motorist was said to have been healing from injuries deemed non-life-threatening. Officers confirmed this driver was not speeding and not under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Police still have not shared the specifics regarding the sort of charges that could be brought to the motorist.
