Car occupants killed, semi driver hurt in Port St. Lucie collision

PORT ST. LUCIE, FL – A crash between a Nissan Altima and a semi-truck claimed the life of a car driver and passenger and injured the truck driver Thursday morning.

WPTV said the events unfolded around 2 a.m. on Florida’s Turnpike North when the driver of the Nissan Altima had crashed into the Freightliner Cascadia big rig, which then pushed the car into a concrete wall and led the truck to overturn.

Upon arrival, Florida Highway Patrol declared the car driver, a 41-year-old man from Hauppauge, New York, and his passenger, a 36-year-old woman from the same place of residence, dead at the scene. Ambulance crews rushed the surviving truck driver to HCA Florida Lawnwood Hospital.

First responders and crews shut down the Turnpike’s northbound lanes for several hours before reopening the area at 9:30 a.m.

Officials have not disclosed the contributing factors behind this wreck, stated the truck driver’s age and place of residence, or stated their current physical condition.
