Tanker truck fatally hits pedestrian in downtown Fort Lauderdale

DOWNTOWN FORT LAUDERDALE, FL – A driver of a tanker truck struck a cyclist in the area of East Las Olas Boulevard, leading to the biker’s death Friday.

According to WSVN, Fort Lauderdale Police and fire crews arrived at the scene before 8 a.m. and immediately closed eastbound Las Olas and southbound Seabreeze Boulevard and later reopened the area.

Eyewitnesses said the truck driver did not even realize he ran over the pedestrian, dragging him several feet until good Samaritans told him so. Once the driver realized what happened, he then stopped, remained at the scene, and cooperated with investigators.

Police have not released the victim’s name at this time, provided specifics behind Friday’s wreck, and have not confirmed whether the driver will face criminal charges or can expect citations.

Updates will be provided if more details come to light.
