Girl, 17, loses life in West Palm Beach car wreck with light pole
WEST PALM BEACH, FL – A teenage driver crashed into a concrete light pole, leading the pole to fall on his car, resulting in the death of the passenger with him — a 17-year-old girl.
This collision happened after midnight Monday on the 2000 block of North Congress Avenue, WPTV said. The crash unfolded when the teenage motorist, who drove a 2005 Hyundai Sonata, tried to avoid hitting the driver of a dark-colored pickup truck, who, for reasons unclear, traveled south on the northbound lanes of North Congress. As a result, the Hyundai motorist pressed on his brakes and lost control of his vehicle, leading to a collision with the pole.
The 17-year-old girl was pronounced dead at the scene. Our newsroom has declined to mention her name due to her status as a minor. The Hyundai driver, a 17-year-old boy, and another passenger with him, also a 17-year-old girl, sustained minor injuries.
The details of this fatal wreck are under investigation, and there are not many details available at this time. However, officials did confirm that the driver of the pickup truck, which was believed to have been blue or black, fled the scene. Authorities suspect the pickup truck driver was a teenager, and the passengers in the truck were also teens.
