1 dead, 1 hospitalized following Port St. Lucie big rig, car crash
PORT ST. LUCIE, FL – One person died, and another individual was hospitalized after a crash between a big rig and a car on Florida’s Turnpike Tuesday.
According to WPTV, the events unfolded before 11:30 p.m. when the truck driver’s attached tandem trailer slammed into a concrete rail and then hit the car. Once the vehicles collided, 100 gallons poured from the truck.
The truck potentially “scraped the bottom” of the overpass, and its driver suffered fatal injuries at the scene. EMS crews rushed the surviving occupant to a nearby medical facility while transportation workers stayed behind and shut down the north and southbound directions. Firefighters also remained at the scene to contain the spill. No vehicle fires were reported.
Authorities did not specify if the surviving occupant was a car driver or passenger.
Florida Highway Patrol is leading the investigation and has not released other information, including the victim’s identity.
